Do you want to keep a close eye on your home, store, or business premises? With video surveillance, you can view live feeds, record footage, and—with many systems—receive an alert as soon as a person or vehicle is detected. From a single, simple camera at the front door to complete camera systems with multiple IP cameras and a recorder: the options vary considerably.
Camera Security for Home or Business
For home security, one to four cameras are often sufficient. Think of a camera at the front door, driveway, backyard, or garage. You can then use an app to view live feeds and review recorded footage.
For a business property, more coverage is often needed. For example, you might want to monitor an entrance, warehouse, parking lot, and loading area simultaneously. In such a situation, a complete camera system with multiple cameras and centralized storage is usually more practical.
What types of security cameras are available?
You can choose from various models. The shape sometimes indicates the best application.
A turret camera has a compact, round housing and is popular for homes and commercial properties. A dome camera is housed in a dome-shaped casing and is commonly used under canopies, in stores, and at entrances.
A bullet camera has an elongated shape and stands out more clearly. This can be beneficial when the camera is also intended to act as a visible deterrent. For larger areas, there are also PTZ cameras. PTZ stands for Pan, Tilt, and Zoom: the camera can pan, tilt, and zoom.
Camera systems with an NVR recorder
Do you want to use multiple cameras and store footage locally for an extended period? In that case, an NVR is often the central component of the system.
NVR stands for Network Video Recorder. The recorder receives footage from the IP cameras and stores it on a hard drive. You can then view live feeds, search by date and time, and export clips of interest. An NVR is particularly convenient for larger camera systems because it allows you to manage all footage from a single central location.
What brands of video surveillance systems are available?
AlarmsysteemExpert offers several well-known brands, each with its own unique features.
Hikvision surveillance systems feature a very wide range of professional IP cameras, recorders, and smart detection technologies. The brand is suitable for both residential homes and large-scale commercial installations.
Dahua surveillance also offers complete camera systems, ranging from individual IP cameras to NVR recorders. Many models feature smart detection capabilities for people and vehicles, for example.
Reolink camera security is popular among users who prefer to do much of the installation themselves. The product line includes PoE, Wi-Fi, and battery-powered cameras, as well as compatible recorders.
Ajax camera security combines video surveillance with the well-known Ajax security system. This is particularly useful if you want to manage alarm detection and camera footage within a single platform.
Eufy camera security focuses heavily on user-friendly smart cameras, video doorbells, and local storage. This can be an accessible solution, especially for home camera security.
Pay Attention to Image Quality and Night Vision
When choosing a camera, many people first look at the number of megapixels. That’s important, but it’s not the only thing you should consider.
Also consider night vision. Some cameras use infrared and display black-and-white images in complete darkness. Other models can maintain color images longer in low light or activate built-in white lighting.
The lens is also important. A wide-angle lens provides a broad overview, while a narrower lens can capture more detail at a greater distance.
Smart detection prevents unnecessary alerts
Modern security cameras can often distinguish between different types of movement.
For example, basic motion detection can also be triggered by leaves, rain, or shadows. Smarter cameras specifically recognize people or vehicles. This means you’ll receive fewer alerts that aren’t useful.
Consider a camera mounted on the front of a house. You probably want to be notified when someone walks up your driveway, but not every time a tree sways.
Where are you allowed to install a security camera?
The most important rule is that your camera should film your own home and property as much as possible. So don’t just point it at your neighbors’ yard or the public street. According to the Dutch Data Protection Authority, you must adjust the camera so that it captures as little of other people and public spaces as possible. Only when there is absolutely no other option may a small portion of that area be captured in the footage, subject to certain conditions.
Many cameras have privacy zones that allow you to blur parts of the image. This can be useful when, for example, a small portion of your neighbor’s property would otherwise inevitably be captured in the footage.
Installing Your Own Camera Surveillance System
Nowadays, you can install many camera systems yourself. Wi-Fi or battery-powered cameras, in particular, are relatively simple to set up. PoE systems are also easy to install on your own if you’re comfortable running network cables. In such cases, a single cable typically provides both the network connection and power.
For larger systems, carefully planning the placement beforehand is just as important as the installation itself. Where do people enter the property? What area needs to be clearly visible? And where can you mount the camera without backlighting or obstacles?
Not sure about these details? Stop by our showroom in Gorinchem. There, we can demonstrate various cameras and camera systems and work with you to determine what’s best for your situation.
