TP-Link VIGI Netwerk Video Recoders (NVR)

Network Video Recorders / NVR recorders

With a Network Video Recorder, also called an NVR recorder, you store camera images from your IP cameras safely and conveniently. An NVR forms the heart of a professional camera system: you connect your IP cameras, record images, watch live and can easily retrieve recordings when needed. NVR systems are used for homes, stores, offices, warehouses, commercial properties and outdoor areas.

Why use an NVR recorder?

An NVR recorder ensures that your camera footage is stored locally, without having to rely entirely on cloud storage. This is ideal if you want to record continuously, store footage for longer periods of time or quickly review evidence after an incident. Many modern NVRs support live viewing, playback, multiple channels and control via app, browser or software. TP-Link VIGI, for example, describes NVRs as recorders that allow you to store, live view and playback camera footage.

Depending on the model, you choose a 4-channel, 8-channel, 16-channel, 32-channel or 64-channel NVR. This way, you can easily put together a camera system that fits the number of cameras you are using now and may want to expand later.

NVR with PoE: connecting cameras with one cable

A popular choice is an NVR with PoE. PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. This allows you to connect IP cameras directly to the recorder without a separate power adapter for each camera. This makes installation more convenient and reliable.

Many brands provide NVR recorders with built-in PoE ports, for example, for 4, 8 or 16 cameras. TP-Link VIGI offers 4-, 8- and 16-channel PoE+ NVRs within the VIGI series, among others.

Which NVR do you need?

When choosing an NVR recorder, pay particular attention to the number of channels, storage capacity, PoE support, maximum camera resolution and compatibility with your IP cameras. For example, if you use 4 cameras, then a 4-channel NVR is often sufficient. If you want to expand later, then an 8- or 16-channel recorder makes more sense.

The hard drive is also important. How long images are stored depends on the number of cameras, the resolution, the number of frames per second, motion detection and the size of the hard drive, among other things. For business applications or locations that record continuously, a larger storage capacity is often recommended.
